MURRAY & ROBERTS INVESTS IN SOUTH AFRICAN RUNNING AND ESTABLISHES ELITE AND DEVELOPMENT RUNNING CLUB

Johannesburg, 01 November 2018 – Multinational engineering and construction group Murray & Roberts this evening announced their ownership, management and funding of the new Murray & Roberts Running Club.

Made during the annual Murray & Roberts Jack Cheetham and Letsema awards in Johannesburg, the Group Chief Executive, Henry Laas said: “We are very excited to launch the Murray & Roberts Running Club. We are able to clearly identify with the athletes and the excellence they achieve through their physical and mental training. Seeing these athletes run in Murray & Roberts colours is symbolic of the Group’s philosophy of Engineered Excellence. Running is a sport that is practiced by a diverse and wide ranging community and through our support, we are looking forward to contributing to the development of running in South Africa.”

National Club Manager, Dana Coetzee, a double Comrades Green number holder added: “It is a privilege to be associated with the Murray & Roberts Running Club, as all our athletes now have a new home. We are in the fortunate position of having world class athletes in our team, as well as a group of young development runners. Look out for the black and yellow running team in January 2019, we will be a force to be reckoned with.”

Club Chairman and Murray & Roberts Group Investor and Media Executive, Ed Jardim comments: “We are excited to embark on this journey with the club and athletes. The timing is ideal, as this new brand opportunity and sponsorship, echoes the company’s New Strategic Future strategy, after having sold its infrastructure and building businesses in 2017 and exiting the civil and building construction sector. The Group is now recognized for delivering its capabilities into the natural resource market sectors of oil & gas; metals & minerals and power & water.”

Murray & Roberts has also taken ownership of the Vorentoe Running Academy, which forms part of the running club’s development squad. This Auckland Park-based team of young, talented runners, has produced multiple champions over the last few years.

“There is so much potential in this academy for the club to nurture and develop. We have a deep desire to fulfil our corporate citizenship ambitions to achieve astounding outcomes, not just for the school but also for South Africa and eventually on the roads and the athletic tracks of the world”, concludes Laas.

Murray & Roberts has a long and proud heritage of more than a century in South Africa, with the Group employing more than 10 000 employees. Through its sponsorship, Murray & Roberts aims to promote health and wellness to all its employees, through which the running club provides the ideal medium. The brand message inherent in the investment is clearly a stronger, fitter and more effective workforce, supporting the Group’s goal of achieving Zero Harm across its operations.

The official launch of the club and its club running kit will be early in January 2019.
